Decks of the Smokies was founded in 2004 by Bobby and Karen Tanner — a husband-and-wife team with a simple belief: if you’re going to build something for a family, build it like it’s for your own. Starting with a pickup truck, a crew of two, and a handful of local referrals, Bobby turned a passion for craftsmanship into the region’s most trusted outdoor construction company.
Over the past two decades, we’ve grown to a team of 25 dedicated professionals, but our roots haven’t changed. Every project still gets the same personal attention it did on day one. We know the terrain, the weather, the HOAs, and the neighborhoods — because we live here too.

With 25+ years in outdoor construction, Bobby founded Decks of the Smokies on his belief that every family deserves a beautiful, well-built outdoor space. He still shows up to job sites every week.
Karen Tanner
Co-Founder & Operations
Karen manages the business side of Decks of the Smokies — from project scheduling and client communication to finance and vendor partnerships. She’s the reason everything runs smoothly.
Dale Hutchins
Lead Project Manager
Dale oversees all active builds from permit to punchlist. With 15 years on the crew, he knows every detail of how we work and ensures every project meets our exacting standards.
